We just wrapped “Film Month” inside our membership, Lensel PRO. Ending with a simple homework challenge: share five film photos and explain the creative or technical connection between them.

We had incredible photographers all over the world sharing their perspectives on film…. But McSween Photography hit on an idea we NEEDED to share with you all:

BUT film doesn’t have to mean one aesthetic. It can be clean and technically perfect, or strange, messy and experimental. Sometimes both in the same body of work.

“I think there is a big misconception today that film has to be one thing or the other…but among consumers, that film is grungy and not technically accurate, more of a “you get what you get” mentality. When thats not the only way.”

When the couple already has a VERY clear creative vision, the photography has to rise to meet it. The Vernacular Photography takes us inside a Portugal wedding built more like an art installation than a traditional celebration, but that didn’t mean it wasn’t full of feeling. WOW. Jump inside the feature and learn what it was like photographing close friends while trying to preserve that feeling.

“The ceremony was designed more like an art installation than a traditional ceremony. Guests stood throughout the space, surrounded by sculptures, furniture, and florals, with no fixed aisle or obvious main viewpoint. It was difficult to photograph because the angles were different from normal, but that unpredictability forced me to keep moving and responding. I wanted the images to preserve the feeling of experiencing the space, not simply document what happened inside it.”

It’s not just you. Most photographers are major editing over-thinkers.

You make it warmer. Too warm. Pull the temperature back. Greens are weird now. Fix those. Skin feels too pink. Fix that. Drive yourself crazy. Open someone else’s Instagram. NOW YOU’VE REALLY DONE IT

From those starting out, to those who you would think have a super defined and consistent style, the secret is almost all are over thinking their edits (trust us on that one, we know).

The problem is that we believe there is some correct and perfect edit that exists in an image that we haven’t found yet. (the ones we see in everyone else’s work right?). The exact correct skin tone. The exact correct contrast.

But there isn’t one. So here’s the take:

Your editing doesn’t feel right, because it can NEVER be ‘right’. Instead you have to commit to an edit and pursue a certain feeling in your images over time. As unsure about it as you may be… Your style comes from making the same kinds of choices, confidently and BOLDLY over and over until they start to feel like you.

So wedding photographers need to stop ‘feeling off’ about the technical parts of their edits and start feeling off about the feeling in their photos instead. FOR THOSE WHO HAVE EARS TO HEAR IT?!
