The wedding world has been hot on ‘ideas’ in photos for a while. A new concept. Weird and wonderful pose. Just something new unexpected. And, we love all the ideas. You know we talk about these kind of fresh photo ideas all the time at Lensel.

BUT a caveat on all this idea talk. Often the best and most simple one is sitting right in front of you. Or more likely, falling across a wall or a field.

It’s the light.

You can spend a lot of time searching for better backgrounds, better poses and more interesting moments. But sometimes the light is the entire concept you need in a photo.

We wrote previously about photographers have lost the art of seeing the light. And… We feel like, recently, there’s been a gentle return to more simple concepts and photos were the light is the thing that’s great about an image. WE LOVE THAT.

Here are a few photographs we found this week to show you what we mean…

In this incredible set from Camille Delaune the frames are simple, the poses quiet and still, but the light is masterful. She consistently found differnt spots of backlight, highlighting the stunning veil. + it’s backlight combined with a darker background to really make it pop.

It’s about learning to see how these spots of light fall and having the vision to use THAT AS YOUR CONCEPT.

On the left theres not much else other than, stand there in that sliver of light. And it’s perfect.
On the right, it’s the same. No wild pose, no crazy prompt. Just noticing where the shadow line is and using that as the concept.

Everything about this image is made to draw your eye to the bride. Especially the light.

The photographer could have shot this scene a few different ways. But here they chose to let the light lead and popped the bride into that side light streaming in. It’s magic and again - it’s a mastery light that is all the concept you will need.

So this week, when you don’t know what to photograph, or you feel some kind of pressure to have a ‘big idea’… Just find some great light and let that be your idea.
